On a beautiful sunny day, King Graham of Daventry decides to take a stroll in the woods surrounding his castle. When he returns, he discovers with horror that his home, Daventry Castle, has completely disappeared! Graham is at a loss, and wonders how this could have happened, when a talking owl named Cedric appears. He tells him that he saw the whole thing, and that an evil wizard named Mordack whisked the entire castle away, along with Graham's family in it. Cedric offers to take him to his homeland, Serenia, where his master, the wizard Crispin resides. Surely Crispin will be able to help King Graham rescue his family from Mordack's clutches.

The evil wizard Mordack, brother of Manannan (the antagonist of King's Quest III), shrinks Daventry castle and its inhabitants and imprisons them in a bottle. Mordack threatens to feed the royal family to Manannan, who was transformed into a cat in KQIII, unless Prince Alexander can restore him to human form. As King Graham was out for a walk when Mordack shrank the castle, he is the only one who wasn't trapped by the spell. With the help of the wizard Crispin and his familiar, Cedric the owl, Graham travels to Mordack's castle to free his family. This is considered by many to be the most innovative part of the King's Quest series. It featured a significant improvement in graphics (achieved through the introduction of VGA into the series) and quickly became the best-selling computer game in history at that time. It was also the first King's Quest installment to replace the typing user interface with a point-and-click user interface, which was criticized by some for supposedly making the game too easy. The game is infamous for its large amount of dead ends and obtuse puzzles. Late in the game Graham must also navigate a frustrating maze of rooms. It was later released in 1992 as a "talkie" CD rom with speech & movies.
